Bond issue passes

It passed by the slimmest of margins, but Gage County voters on Tuesday approved a bond issue totaling $2.8 million to go toward renovations of the Gage County Courthouse.

According to unofficial returns from the Gage County Clerk’s Office, 1,951, or 50.93 percent, voted for the bond issue, while 1,880, or 49.07 percent, voted against the measure.

“I’m almost more excited now than I was when I was elected last,” said Ron Fleecs, Gage County Board of Supervisors District 5 supervisor and chairman of the county’s buildings and grounds committee, after learning of the results of the vote Tuesday night.

“Now we can get started on the roof and go from there.”

Plans for the bond issue called for re-roofing the entire courthouse at an estimated cost of $546,000, replacing the building’s heating and cooling system at a cost of $764,000, replacing all the windows for $529,000 and replacing the electrical system and lighting for $348,000.

Other items included installing a fire suppression system for $98,000 and a fire alarm system for $41,000 and waterproofing the building’s foundation for $98,300.

County officials said the proposed renovations were maintenance items that needed to be done now instead of delayed until later when they would be more expensive.

According to county figures, the bond issue based on current interest rates and property valuation will increase county property taxes by $20 a year for the owner of a home valued at $50,000 and by $40 a year for the owner of a home valued at $100,000.

The county is planning to pay for the project over a five-year period.

In the weeks leading up to Tuesday’s elections, county officials conducted a campaign to inform the public about what they saw as the need for the bond issue and the planned renovations.

Fleecs, however, said Tuesday night he had been concerned by low turnout at a series of public meetings and two courthouse open houses outlining courthouse repair needs, as well as what he called the lack of talk he heard from people in the community concerning the bond issue.

“I never heard anything,” he said. “But this makes me feel good.”

However, he said he thought Tuesday’s vote showed the message got through.

“I’m really proud of the voters who could see the need for this,” he said.

I was very happy to see the bond issue pass, we need to think of our future generations who will use this building as we have, they don't build them like that anymore!

To "Great news" and "courthouse fan". Thanks for voting for that...Now I have to pay more for property taxes, along with high food prices and gas prices. If more people would have voted, it would not have passed. You have just made this a harder town to reside in. Don't you understand, people are trying to make ends meet with the high gas and food prices and you think this is great. If I had a choice to spend money to paint my barn or feed the kids, what do you think I would do. Get a grip, cause you evidently don't have one

I'm sorry you feel that way, Tim. How do you know that if more people would have voted it wouldn't have passed? Please don't personally attack me by telling me I don't "have a grip" just because I voted for this. I do have a grip. Did YOU attend any of the informational open houses to see how much this will improve the courthouse? It is all work that is desperately needing to be done. Guess what? It's over now, it passed... and overall, Gage County wants this as the numbers show. If this is such a terrible place to reside, then leave.

No you don't. And when they raise my property taxes and I can't afford to live in my house, will the courthouse let me and my family stay there. Your priorities are not right. Don't bother responding to this, cause arguing with people without a grip is like talking to the wall. YOU DON'T GET IT.

We'll I am trying to move, but since selling your house now days is almost impossible, its hard to do. I can't afford to move now, high gas prices, high food taxes, soon to be high property taxes. So much for "spending your dollars in Beatrice" We won't have any to spend.

I'm trying to move also. I have to go to Lincoln in order to afford to buy groceries. Their to high in Beatrice. I guess I would accept them to be a little high priced if there was something to do in this town beside look at the library and the soon to be rennovated courthouse. what a joke. I voted, and the reason I vote is to vote against these ridiculous issues. If they want to rennovate the courthouse...fine....but do it when the country is not in trouble economically. Those who voted for this must either be well off financially or well ignorant.

I think its funny how someone wants to vote on the issue or not and when people tell them if they don't like it...leave??? What kind of town is this. That person probably voted cause he wanted to prevent something that would be negative for the community and everyone wants to run him out of town....WELCOME TO BEATRICE> LOVE IT OR LEAVE IT

You can't blame the ones who voted for the courthouse project. Just because you didn't, and it will raise your taxes, has nothing to do with only you. Can we blame you for the high gas prices, and food prices? Spend your money wisely, paint your barn & feed your kids. If not possible, then move to a less taxed state, or a different county.

We do have an old beautiful courthouse. I do believe we need to fix what is worn out, but lets hope the board uses common sense! Nothing fancy and expensive. No over kill needed, No need to keep up with Lincoln or other counties. use common sence spending the money. And Keep in mind SPEND BEATRICE!!
