James E. “Jim” McGuire, 72, of West Point, passed away Saturday, June 21, 2008, at his home following a year-long courageous battle with cancer.
Born February 9, 1936, at Barneston, Nebraska, the son of Edmund and Margaret “Nell” McGeeney McGuire. On May 24, 1964 at St. Mary’s Church in West Point he married Maureen Moeller. Jim was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in West Point, where he sang in the church choir for 45 years. He worked for Merschman Seed. In 1982, he started with United Suppliers. Following his retirement, he was a truck driver for Richer’s Trucking. He served in the United States Army from 1958-1960; served on the Draft Board for eight years, and served two terms on the Marquette School Board. Jim never let the miles keep him apart from his spending time with his children and grandchildren, his favorite pastime. Jim was a proud Irishman, a great storyteller and had a song for every occasion, he never met a stranger.
Survivors include his wife Maureen of West Point; three sons, Doug (Karla) McGuire of Cherokee, Kansas, Brian (Michele) McGuire of Plymouth, Minnesota, and Brad (Dawn) McGuire of Ames, Iowa; two daughters, Amy (Darren) Angel of Olathe, Kansas, and Julie (Wayne) Lynch of Boone, Iowa; thirteen grandchildren, Shauna, Mandy, Bridget, Courteney, Jacob, Riley, Brennan, Zachary, Henry, Nathan, Gannon, Abbey and Paige; three brothers, Mike (Elaine) McGuire of Columbus Nebraska, Dennis (Kay) McGuire of Lincoln, Nebraska, and Tom McGuire of Barneston, Nebraska; three sisters, Mary McGuire of Littleton, Colorado, Julia Triggs of Spokane, Washington, Sr. Loretta McGuire O.S.B. of Atchison, Kansas. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; and his sister, Pat Welding, on October 14, 2005.
Mass of Christian Burial was be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, June 24 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in West Point, with Fr. Apo T. Mpanda as celebrant. Burial at Calvary Cemetery in West Point. Memorials may be made to St. Mary’s Church or the Olathe, Kansas, Special Olympics. Schmitz-Lynk Funeral Home and Crematory, West Point, in charge of arrangements.
