Dobrovolny claims feature win

Waterville, Kan., driver Darcy Dobrovolny considered himself lucky to draw the pole for the Factory Stock A Feature during the “Day After Races” Sunday at the Beatrice Speedway.

But Dobrovolny didn’t really know how lucky he was until some time after he took the checkered flag, claiming first place in the $300-to-win main event.

Starting out on the pole and being able to lead the race from start to finish was just part of a lucky streak for Dobrovolny.

When speedway officials were teching Dobrovolny’s race car following the feature, they discovered another piece of lucky which fell his way.

A gasket camee loose in the carburetor of the race car and was “looped” over on the inside. Had the gasket fallen down into the unit, it could have caused the car to have problems getting fuel.

Dobrovolny said sometimes it pays to be lucky. He took the checkered flag just head of Beatrice Kevin VanLaningham, Jeff Shew and Jeff Watts, who finished second, third and fourth, respectively.

With a dry track, Dobrovolny said he wanted to stay “on the bottom.”

“I figured if I could keep the car down there I’d be in good shape,” Dobrovolny said.

Dobrovolny said the other drivers were “beating on his back bumper” throughout the race, but he was able to hold his line.

The win was a “double” first for Dobrovolny.

It was his first win of the season at the Beatrice Speedway and his first win ever in a “special” race. He said he’s been racing eight years.

Dobrovolny said he just comes out each week to “have fun” at the race track.

In the other A Feature contested Sunday night, Jared Warnke of Fairbury won the IMCA Sport Compact championship, while Dallas Dobrovolny and Trent Becker, both of Waterville, Kan., claimed the Cruiser main event and Troy Hudson of Ankeny, Iowa, won the Outlaw Vintage Lites class.
