Only one local driver was able to pull away from the field and earn a championship title during the annual Octoberfest special at the Beatrice Speedway this weekend.
Beatrice’s Tyler Phelps won the IMCA Hobby Stock feature Friday night.
Also on Friday, Jay Noteboom of Hinton, Iowa, came out as the winner in the IMCA Modified main event, while Kevin Sather of Ankeny, Iowa, won the IMCA Sport Mod crown.
Saturday night, Sather became a double winner for the weekend, again winning the Sport Mod A Feature.
In the Modified division, Saturday, David Murray of Oberlin, Kan., won championship honors, while Kent Husted of Sioux City, Iowa, won the Hobby Stock title.
Beatrice Speedway promoter Toby Kruse said he “couldn’t be happier” with the way things went during the annual Octoberfest.
Kruse said he was happy with everything from the weather to the car count to the racing.
“The weather was perfect,” Kruse said. “For the history of Octoberfest, it was probably one of the best weather weekends.”
Comparing car count numbers of last year, Kruse said the Modifieds were “right in line” with where they were a year ago.
In the first year of running the Sport Mods as part of Octoberfest, Kruse said they were “pushing 40” in total numbers and adds the class will continue to grow.
Hobby Stock numbers were also good, Kruse said.
Drivers came from a number of states to race this weekend, Kruse said, including Larry Hood of Bakersfield, Calif., who competed in the Modified division.
Hood is the first California driver to race at the Beatrice Speedway, according to Kruse.
And the racing was excellent, according to the promoter.
“Saturday night, the show on a scale of 1-10, I’d give it about a 12,” Kruse said. “It was phenomenal.”
Kruse said while this weekend marked the end of the 2008 racing season in Beatrice, track officials are already preparing for the 2009 season.
Classes and rules for next year will be posted by Nov. 5 so drivers can start making plans for 2009, Kruse said.
The 2009 season will kickoff at the Beatrice Speedway March 19-22 with the annual Spring Nationals.
