OMAHA - Beatrice senior Brandon Portrey came through in the clutch for the Orangemen cross country team Thursday.
Portrey’s 14th place finish overall helped Beatrice win the tiebreaker and claim championship honors in the River Cities Conference boys cross country meet.
After the top four runners for both Beatrice and Ralston completed the course, the two teams were tied with 31 points all.
The tiebreaker becomes which team’s fifth place runner had the highest finish and Portrey was the “winner.”
Ralston’s fifth-place runner finished 20th.
Matt Dunker finished fourth overall to lead the Orangemen, completing the 5K course in 17:49.0.
Devin Ratigan was seventh for Beatrice, followed by Lucas Martin, ninth; Ross Jensby, 11th; Portrey 14th; Matt Sederberg, 17th; and Trevor Menke, 26th.
In the girls division, the Lady Orange finished as the conference runners-up.
Omaha Skutt won the championship with 27 points, while Beatrice finished with 47.
Jessica Pinkerton led the Beatrice girls, finishing fourth overall in 16:49.6.
The Lady Orange’s Taylor Garton followed Pinkerton across the finish line, placing fifth.
Kristina Wilson was 19 for Beatrice, while Alicia Huettner was 21st, Laura Jantz was 24th, Emily Zarybnicky was 27th and Alison Engler was 29th.
