Victor Fred Henry Meyer, 79, Beatrice, Neb., died at his home on Tuesday, Nov. 18, 2008. He was born Aug. 8, 1929, at rural Odell, Neb., to Herman and Mathilda (Grefe) Meyer. He was baptized and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church, Hanover, Kan.
He attended school at rural Hanover, Kan., through the eighth grade. He married Floice Daubendiek on June 3, 1956, at St. John Lutheran Church, Beatrice, Neb. He served in the Army during the Korean War. He was a mechanic for Novotny Brothers in Odell, Neb.; worked as a farmhand for 24 years for Paul Grabouski; and then went to work at Exmark, where he worked full-time for 10 years before going to part-time. He was a member of the Beatrice VFW, St. Paul Lutheran Church (Beatrice), and Lutheran Layman’s League. He was a past member of the Stewardship and Evangelism Committee.
Survivors include his wife, Floice Meyer, of Beatrice; daughters, Susan Haran and husband, Mike, of Boulder, Mont., Sharon Goedeken and husband, Frank, of Dodge City, Kan., Shirly Brown of Beatrice, Neb., Sheila Ver Straeten and husband Tom of Winterset, Iowa; 5 grandchildren, Nicole Tschetter and husband, Shane, of Duncan, Neb., Tara, Mitchell and Matthew Goedeken of Dodge City, Kan., Tim Howdeshell of Ames, Iowa; brother, Norbert Meyer and wife, Tena, of Beatrice, Neb.; sister, Velma Blanken and husband, Elmer, of Leavenworth, Kan.; sister-in-law, Monetta Meyer of Beatrice, Neb.; brothers-in-law, Armin Daubendiek and wife Beverly of Fairbury, Neb., Alfred Daubendiek and wife Maria of Beatrice, Gerhardt Daubendiek and wife Sandra of Beatrice; sister-in-law, Mavis Stratton and husband Kenny of Omaha, Neb.; nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Herman O. and Mathilda (Grefe) Meyer; three sisters, Marie Meyer, Elnora Baumann, Erna Licht; brother, Ernest Meyer; brother-in-law, Gerhard Licht.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 20, 2008, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 10th and High streets, Beatrice, with Pastor Douglas Irmer and Pastor Timothy Wagner officiating. A family prayer service will be held at 10:15 a.m. Thursday. Burial will be in the Evergreen Home Cemetery, Beatrice, Neb. The body will lie in state at the Harman-Wright Mortuary, 623 Elk, Beatrice, Wednesday from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m., and then at the church one hour preceding services. A memorial has been established to St. Paul Lutheran Church for the Bell Tower Fund with Dean and Myrna Faulder in charge. Harman-Wright Mortuary in charge of arrangements.
