Rusty Dawkins no longer will deliver weather forecasts for Gray Television, but he doesn't plan to quit weather entirely.
The meteorologist announced Sunday on Twitter he accepted a position as social media manager with the Arbor Day Foundation. He started Monday.
Friday was his last day for Gray, where he forecast weather for KOLN/KGIN-TV (Lincoln), KSNB-TV (Hastings) and KNOP-TV (North Platte).
"I do still love weather, and I know you guys love having weather information, so I still need to figure some things out," Dawkins said in a YouTube video he posted Sunday on Twitter. "I still want to provide everybody with weather information. If there's going to be a big blizzard, a tornado outbreak or something big like that, I'll make sure everybody knows about it just because I love weather so much — and day-to-day stuff, too."
Dawkins, who is from Gordon and graduated from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, returned to KOLN in 2012 after working at the station from 2003-2007. In between, he served as chief meteorologist at KAAL-TV in Austin, Minnesota.
He is married to former KOLN anchor Melanie Bloom. She left the station in 2015 and works in Lincoln as a real estate agent. They have two children.
