A sweetheart theme was the topic of the first meeting in February of Nebraska Torchbearer Zeta. Donna Schultze hosted the meeting by sharing two poems with the members. The first poem was written by Grace Easley, titled “We Need No Words Dear,” and the other was by Virginia Peace, titled “Enduring Love.”
These two poems set the mood for the program on how each member met and married the “love of their life.” In keeping with the theme, members brought wedding albums and pictures to share and told how they met their husbands.
How members met their spouses varied. Some were high school sweethearts, others met at the drive-in and later at dances, and one even went on a double date with roommates and ended up with the other person's date. Other members met their spouses at work on the same assembly line, or they met at someone else’s wedding, some met on a blind date. One husband saw his future wife at a movie and sat next to her; he asked to see her class ring and she had to go on a date with him to get it back. Another member met her spouse on a blind date at the Broken Arrow (that’s a throw back), after he had just gotten back from the service.
Honeymoons included visiting the Smokey Mountains in Tennessee, Kansas City and Weston, Mo., Tahiti, Colorado, the Lake of the Ozarks, Junction City, Kan. then on to Carlsbad Caverns in New Mexico, as well as John Brown's Cave in Nebraska City.
Years of being married ranged from 14 years to one member who will be celebrating her 60th wedding anniversary in August, and everywhere in between. All this proves that love still exists and the members were happy to share these happy beginnings of their lives.
Vice President Schultze received the Beta Sigma Phi Certification form outlining the degrees members were in. A gift catalog was received from International, and Treasurer Zita Lomax will be ordering the necessary charms for the remainder of the year.
Plans for the annual Founders' Day banquet are going well and the event is set for April 26 at the Kensington in downtown Beatrice.
The next meeting will be hosted by Zita Lomax. Members able to attend the meeting should meet at the Eagles Club in Beatrice at 5:30 p.m. Members will participate in the Hamburger Night and will have a short meeting and program afterward.
