Jacqueline A. 'Jackie' Hovendick
Jacqueline A. 'Jackie' Hovendick, 86 years of age, of Beatrice passed away at her home surrounded by her family on Monday afternoon, April 9, 2018. She was born on February 28, 1932 in Lincoln to Heath and Blanche (Martz) Griffiths and was a 1949 graduate of Beatrice High School. Jackie graduated from the University of Nebraska in 1953 and was a member of the Alpha Phi sorority. On April 11, 1955 she was united in marriage to Richard E. Hovendick. She was a teacher for children with learning disabilities at the Educational Service Unit #5 in Beatrice for 15 years, and is the co-owner, along with her husband, of the Griffiths-Hovendick Chapel. Jackie was an active member of Christ Church Episcopal and had served on the Altar Guild, taught Sunday school, sang in the choir, was treasurer of Women's Guild, and had been on the vestry. She was a member and past president of Fortnightly Book Club, Beatrice Community Hospital Guild, and P.E.O. Chapter Z. Jackie was also a member of Mrs. Jaycees, Children's Guild (and volunteered at the Bargain Box), delivered Meals on Wheels for many years, and played cards on several bridge clubs. Jackie received the 1994 Volunteer of the Year award from the Beatrice Chamber of Commerce Women's Division, was a lifetime member of the PTA, and was a lifetime member of the University of Nebraska Alumni Association.
She loved playing bridge, reading, being active in the community, and spending time and visiting with her friends. But above all else, Jackie loved her family. She was their main source of support, and was their head cheerleader (with her unique way of cheering) as she and Dick attended all of her children and grandchildren's activities.
Left to mourn her passing is her husband of 63 years, Dick Hovendick; her children, Rich Hovendick and wife Linda, Steve Hovendick and wife Carolyn, all of Beatrice, Kirk Hovendick and wife Laurie of Hickman, and Laurie Olberding of Papillion; 10 grandchildren, Britney and Ashton Hovendick, Samantha (Nick) Thompson, Carly and Heath Hovendick, Jacob (Meagan) Hovendick, Kalli (Kyle) Sawyer, John Hovendick, Johnathan (fiancé Taylor Roberts) Olberding, and Joshua Olberding; 4 great grandchildren, Henley and Huxton Hovendick, and Caden and Emmilyn Sawyer; brother-in-law, Bob Rogers; sister-in-law, Phyllis Hovendick; and several nieces and nephews and cousins. Jackie was preceded in death by her parents, Heath and Blanche (Martz) Griffiths; parents in law Lester and Mabel Hovendick; her beloved sister, Joyce Rogers; and brothers-in-law, Bud Hovendick and wife Wanda, and Donald Hovendick.
Memorial services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, April 14, 2018 at the Christ Church Episcopal in Beatrice with Reverend Marilyn Hasemann officiating.
