Marie (Mary Ellen) Meints
Marie (Mary Ellen) Meints, 93, of Beatrice died Sunday morning, Sept. 10, 2017 at the Homestead House in Beatrice. She was born on Oct. 3, 1923 near Filley to Thee T. and Marie (Leners) Jurgens. She was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in 1957 and lived many years, beyond all expectations. Mary Ellen was known for baking specialty goods for Lang's Grocery on Sixth Street and catering parties in Beatrice. She enjoyed reading, sewing, dancing and visiting with friends and relatives. Mary Ellen attended Olney Country School and was confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church of rural Pickrell in April 1939 by the Rev. J. B. Reents. She married Elmer Frederick Meints on Nov. 27, 1941 at Zion Lutheran Church. During their first years of marriage, Elmer and Mary Ellen lived in the Beatrice area. In 1955, they moved to a farm northeast of Blue Springs, where Elmer and Mary Ellen became charter members of Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Wymore. In 1962, they returned to Beatrice, and in 1966, Elmer and Mary Ellen became charter members of Holy Cross Lutheran Church.
She is survived by her six children, Diana K. Church of Plano, Texas, Donald F. (Cheryl) Meints of Corinth, Miss., Richard L. Meints of Beatrice, Mary Jo Newman (Steve) of Beatrice, John A. Meints of Holmesville and Carol (Roger) Humphrey of Lebanon, Tenn.; her nine grandchildren; her 18 great-grandchildren; several great-great-grandchildren; her sister, Teda (Jurgens) Beran with husband, Loren; her brother, Roger L. (Linda) Jurgens; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, T.T. and Marie (Leners) Jurgens; her husband and the father of her children, Elmer F. Meints, who died on Oct. 8, 1968; her second husband, Clarence “Red” Whitmer, who died in Feb. 1979; her third husband, John Adams, who died in Sept. 1996; her great-grandson, Joshua Newman; two sisters, Elsie Ottersberg and Joan Gartner; and three brothers-in-law, John Ottersberg, Virgil Jurgens and Harry Gartner.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 13, 2017 at Holy Cross Lutheran Church with the Rev. Dr. Delmar D. Wiemers officiating. Burial will be at the Emmanuel Lutheran Cemetery of rural Beatrice. A family prayer service will be held at 10:15 a.m. on Wednesday in the fellowship room of the church. In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established to Holy Cross Church, with Clarence and Joyce Parde in charge. Closed casket visitation will be held on Tuesday from 8 a.m. until 9 p.m. The family will greet relatives and friends from 6-7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
