Max E. Harbach

Max E. Harbach, age 91, a resident of Naperville, Ill. since 1971, passed away on Friday, Dec. 1, 2017 at the Springs of Monarch Landing in Naperville. He was born on March 17, 1926 in Williamsport, Pa.

He was the husband of Phyllis Harbach (nee Gladewitz), whom he married on Jan. 30, 1949. Max was the father of Alice (Terry) Philippi of Denton, Neb., Meredith (Bob) Winkler of O'Fallon, Ill. and Beverly (Brian Walker) Harbach of Downers Grove, Ill. He was the grandfather of Jenny (Grant) Powell, Drew (Katie) Philippi and Evan Philippi, Erin (Brian Sweet) Winkler and Matthew (Elizabeth) Winkler and Morgan Harbach Walker. He was the great-grandfather of Max and Lilly Powell, Nash, Jules and Teller Philippi, Emma Roller and Alex Sweet. Max was the son of the late Chester and Bertha (nee Reppard) Harbach. He was the brother of Chester A. (Barbara) Harbach of Williamsport, Pa. and the late Howard (the late Betty) Harbach and the late Bernice (the late Carl) Kackenmeister. Max was the cousin, uncle, great-uncle and friend of many.

Max grew up in Williamsport, Pa. He was a 1944 graduate of Williamsport Senior High School and served with the U.S. Navy from June 1944 to June 1946 in the Pacific theater, aboard the USS Hancock, during World War II. After receiving an honorable discharge, Max attended Lycoming College in Williamsport before transferring to Syracuse University in Syracuse, N.Y. and earning a civil engineering degree in 1950. Max retired in 1986 after 36 years of service as General Superintendent of Construction with the Natural Gas Pipeline in Lombard, Ill. Max was an active member of Grace United Methodist Church in Naperville, serving on the board of trustees and as a member of the choir from 1972 to 1992. He was also a member of the American Legion Naperville post 43. Max was a skilled woodworker who made his own furniture, toys, etc. He applied his skills as a volunteer at Naper Settlement for 30 years.

Memorial visitation will take place on Thursday, Dec. 7, 2017 from 9-10 a.m. at Grace United Methodist Church, located at 300 E. Gartner Road, Naperville, IL 60540. Call 630-355-1748. Memorial services will be held on Thursday at 10 a.m. in the church, with the Rev. Don Niswonger officiating. A luncheon will follow the funeral services at the church. Family and friends will meet Thursday at 2:30 p.m. at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery of Elwood, Ill. for committal services and military honors.
