Melvin D. Vitosh
Melvin Dean Vitosh, 79, of Odell died on Sept. 5, 2017, at the Good Samaritan Society of Beatrice after a 10-year battle with Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma.
He was born on Sept. 21, 1937 in Odell to Joseph and Rose (Bures) Vitosh. He was baptized on July 31, 2014, at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha and attended Our Savior Lutheran Church in Odell. He graduated from Odell High School in 1955. Melvin was united in marriage to Lylah Luebken on Sept. 21, 1958, and lived on a farm four miles north of Odell for their entire 56 years of marriage. To this union, three sons and a daughter were born.
Melvin served in the National Guard for six years and worked briefly at Dempster's Industries in Beatrice. He was a farmer his entire life and operated his own dairy from 1961-2001. He enjoyed farming, family, playing cards, polka dancing, watching funny movies and sharing stories from when he played sports in high school. He also loved attending his kids' and grandkids' sporting and music events. Even though his cancer reoccurred four times, he continued to farm and do the things he loved until the very end.
Survivors include his sons, Brian, Brad with wife, Amy and Bruce with wife, Gwen, all of Odell; his daughter, Rhonda with husband, Larry Zarybnicky of Beatrice; his grandchildren, Shane Vitosh with wife, Laine of Chicago, Ill., Morgan with husband, J.T. Toensing of Concordia, Mo., Brittney with husband, Kolin Kotas, Brock Vitosh, Blake Vitosh, Delanie Vitosh and Austin Vitosh, all of Odell, Hunter Zarybnicky, Landon Zarybnicky and Bailey Zarybnicky, all of Beatrice; his great-grandchildren, Kyler and Kasen Kotas of Odell and Audrey Vitosh of Chicago, Ill.; his siblings, Walt with wife, Beverly Vitosh and Lorraine Bates, all of Beatrice, Maxine with husband, John Marshall of Castle Rock, Colo., Arnie with wife, Judy Vitosh of Odell and Gary Vitosh of Beatrice; his sisters-in-law, Carolyn Vitosh of Odell, Bernice Vitosh and Ruth Reel with special friend, Frank Holtmeier of Beatrice and Sharon with husband, Joe Schuller of York; his brother-in-law, Wally Andreoli of Lake Forest, Calif.; as well as many cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.
Melvin was preceded in death by his wife, Lylah, who died on Sept. 26, 2014; his parents, Joseph and Rose Vitosh; his parents-in-law, William and Hilda Shalla and Edward Luebken; his brothers, Leroy Vitosh and Larry Vitosh; his brothers-in-law, Lou Bates, Al Reel and Bob Kisling; as well as his sisters-in-law, Neva Andreoli and Carol Scheele.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 9, at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Odell, with Pastor Gregory Stuckwisch officiating. Burial will be at the Odell Czech Cemetery. The body will lie in state on Friday from noon until 9 p.m. at Griffiths-Hovendick Chapel in Beatrice, with the family greeting friends from 6-8 p.m. and at the church for one hour preceding the services on Saturday.
