Viola Sue Howey (nee Johnson), 101 years of age, passed away Saturday, Feb. 6, 2010, at the Waterfield Memory Care Home in Las Vegas, Nev. She was the widow of Earle T. Howey Sr. of Beatrice, Neb.
Viola was born Dec. 16, 1908, in Barry County, Mo., and married Earle Sr. in Beatrice in 1933. She was a devoted wife for 57 years.
Viola belonged to Beatrice’s First Presbyterian Church, and was an active member of the local P.E.O. chapter. Well-known on the auction circuit, she was an avid collector of Oriental rugs, china, and Navajo rugs and jewelry. Viola also traveled the U.S. and Europe with family at every opportunity.
Her fondest love was Grand Lake, Colo., where she met her husband, and enjoyed the many summers she spent there with her family. Viola resided full-time in Grand Lake following the death of Earle Sr. in 1990. She subsequently moved to Santa Barbara, Calif., then to Las Vegas, Nev., to be near her son, Earle Jr., who was committed to her well-being.
She was a loving wife, a dedicated mother, and a delightful friend. She will be truly missed.
Viola is survived by two sons, Earle T. Howey Jr. and his wife Sue, of Las Vegas, Nev., and Frederick H. Howey and wife Barbara, of San Rafael, Calif.; four grandchildren, Tami, Kati, Lesley, Lauren; and six great-grandchildren.
Memorial services are planned to be held in the future in Grand Lake, Colo., and Beatrice, Neb. Memorial donations may be made to a favorite charity, if desired.
