FBI officials in Omaha warned college students on Tuesday of a new phone scam where criminals pose as special agents seeking loan repayment.

The criminals' telephone number displays as the number for an FBI Field Office, spokesman Huston Pullen said.

During these hoax calls, the caller demands repayment for a school loan and threatens arrest if immediate payment is not provided, Pullen said.

This scam has used the telephone numbers of FBI offices in at least eight states.

FBI agents and officials do not call private citizens requesting money, Pullen said.

These calls are a reminder for people not to give their personal information to individuals they didn't initiate contact with and to be leery of sending money to strangers via prepaid MoneyGram or Green Dot cards, Pullen said.

Anyone who receives these calls or needs to report a related crime can file a complaint through the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center at www.IC3.gov.
