About 100 residents from the Beatrice area joined the Alzheimer’s Association’s Walk to End Alzheimer’s and united in a movement to reclaim the future for millions on Thursday at the YMCA. Although the Walk was moved inside as a weather precaution, participants still came together and raised more than $4,700 to fund Alzheimer's care, support and research programs.
We would like to give a special thank you to our sponsors who helped to make this event a success: AseraCare Hospice, Beatrice Health and Rehabilitation, Beatrice Community Hospital, Gold Crest Retirement Center, Good Samaritan Society Beatrice, Good Samaritan Society Wymore, Exmark Mfg. East Court Casey’s was the top fundraising team at this year’s Walk to End Alzheimer’s, raising $1,000. For eight years now, Cindy Segar and her team have been baking sweet treats and selling them at their store to raise money for their Walk team. Segar’s father passed away from Alzheimer’s. She Walks each year for him, and to find a cure to end the devastating disease.
According to the Alzheimer’s Association 2016 Alzheimer’s Disease Facts and Figures report, there are more than five million Americans living with Alzheimer’s disease, including 33,000 here in Nebraska who are supported by 81,000 unpaid caregivers. The Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s is the world’s largest event to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer care, support and research. Together, we can end Alzheimer’s – the nation’s sixth-leading cause of death.
