With the threat of terrorist attacks not getting any fewer, rather the number of domestic terrorists increasing, I think putting 1,000 elementary students together in one building could have grave consequences.
One thing history has shown is that terrorists will do whatever it takes to achieve their goal. Terrorists flew jet airplanes into the Twin Towers and the Pentagon, Timothy McVeigh did not enter the Federal Building in Oklahoma City. He just packed a truck with explosives in front of the building.
Beatrice Superintendent Pat Nauroth spoke of keeping doors locked in a letter in the Daily Sun. The next day I paid a bill at BPW drive in window. I saw the alley door to the middle school gym standing wide open during school hours.
I don't think doors will stop terrorists. I don't think doors will stop a truck or a bomb. I think the best we can do for the city's children is to keep them dispersed among four smaller schools.
