CENTRAL CiTY -- The Wilber American Legion Seniors team has opened the Class C State Tournament with two straight wins.
Wilber defeated Pierce 9-0 in the first round Saturday before beating Yutan 13-2 in the second round. They were scheduled to play their third round game on Monday at 8 p.m., but that game wasn't over by press time. For those results, see Wednesday's Daily Sun.
With a win, Wilber would play at 8 p.m. on Tuesday against either Alma or PWG. With a loss, they would play at 5 p.m. on Tuesday.
In Saturday's first round game, Josh Kalkwarf was the winning pitcher. He pitched a shutout, giving up just one hit.
Wilber scored nine runs on eight hits. They scored one run in the first inning, three runs in the third inning and five runs in the sixth inning.
In Sunday's 13-2 win, Nathan Thompson was the winner, giving up just two runs on four hits to Yutan.
Wilber exploded out of the gates, scoring eight runs in the first inning and four runs in the fifth inning for a total of 13 runs on 13 hits.
The Class C State Tournament is being hosted by Central City and is a double elimination tournament. It is scheduled to last through Wednesday.
Wilber is trying to make it two straight years with a state championship. Last year, the Juniors' team won Class C State, which was hosted by Tri County.
