SIDNEY -- The Beatrice boys and girls basketball teams won their opening round games of the Sidney Holiday Tournament on Thursday.
The Orangemen defeated Torrington, Wyo. 51-39. They led 25-15 after the first quarter and then turned their defense up a notch.
The Orangemen didn't allow any points in the second quarter and just six points in the third quarter, giving them a 37-21 lead after three quarters, allowing them to coast to the win.
Graham Southwick led the way for Beatrice with 15 points while Dillon Buss scored 11 points. Colton Gronewold had seven points, Andrew Mahoney and Trevor Schmale had six points each, Caleb Wallman had four points and Griffen Vater had two points.
With the win, Beatrice moved on to play Sidney at 7:15 p.m. on Friday. With a win, the Orangemen would advance to Saturday's championship game at 3:15 p.m.
The Lady O also scored a first round win over Torrington, Wyo. 59-26.
Michaela Jones led the scoring for Beatrice with 22 points and 13 rebounds while Addison Barnard had 13 points.
Carley Leners had eight points, 10 steals and 10 rebounds.
The Beatrice girls played Sidney Friday night, who is ranked No. 8 in Class B. With a win, the Lady O will play in the championship game at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday.
