ODELL -- The Diller-Odell girls basketball team was able to hold off Sterling in a defensive battle Friday night.

The Lady Griffins defeated Sterling 37-28 at Diller-Odell High School.

Sterling was able to take a 9-5 lead in the first quarter, but Diller-Odell battled back to lead 15-11 at half. They never relinquished the lead after that. They led 27-18 after three quarters and then went on to win 37-28.

It was the Lady Jets that started off hot Friday night. They opened the game with a 5-0 run thanks to a post basket by Colby Theis and a three pointer by Malayna Wingert.

Diller-Odell's Emily Swanson answered with a three pointer and Mackenzie Vitosh tied it with two free throws, but a put back basket by Morgan Haner and another basket by Theis gave Sterling a 9-5 lead after the first quarter.

The Lady Griffins would outscore Sterling 10-2 in the second quarter. Kirsten Bures started the scoring with a free throw, but Sterling's Wingert came back with a jump shot to make it 11-6.

Two straight baskets by Addison Heidemann followed by a basket from Bures, a free throw by Haley Jones and a put back basket by Tori Smith gave Diller-Odell a 15-11 lead at half time.

Bures opened the second half with a basket to extend the lead, but Wingert came back with a three pointer to make it 17-14. Diller-Odell's Emily Swanson got a steal and a lay-up to extend the lead, but Theis would score in the post again to make it 19-16.

Two baskets by Jones, and a basket each from Bures and Smith extended the Diller-Odell lead to 27-16. Sterling's Sydney Huls ended the third quarter with a basket to make it 27-18.

Sterling would cut the deficit to seven points in the fourth quarter, but never closer as the Griffins would hold off the Jets for a 37-28 win.
