WAVERLY -- The Beatrice girls basketball team used a stifling zone defense to build a lead on Crete and eventually win 41-26 in the first round of the B5 Subdistrict Tournament Monday night at Waverly.
The win for Beatrice avenges a loss to Crete earlier in the season and propels them into the subdistrict final Tuesday night against Norris at 7 p.m. at Waverly High School.
The undersized Lady O packed there zone defense in on Crete's post players, daring the Cardinal guards to take outside shots.
Crete couldn't get their post players going offensively and their shots were missing their mark
Michaela Jones scored all eight points for the Lady O in the first quarter while Crete managed just five points, making it 8-5 after one quarter.
Carley Leners and Jones hit back-to-back jumpers to start the second quarter, extending the lead to 12-5. Crete answered with a basket, but it would be their only basket of the second quarter.
A steal and a layup by Addie Barnard and another basket by Leners finished the first half scoring, making it 16-7 Beatrice at half time.
Crete knocked down two free throws to start the third quarter, but it was all Lady O after that. Haley Sexton hit two three pointers and Jones finished the quarter with two free throws to make it 24-9 after three quarters.
The Cardinals finally knocked down some outside shots in the fourth quarter, but the Lady O was able to answer with baskets and free throws, eventually winning 41-26.
Michaela Jones led the way for the Lady O with 21 points while Leners and Sexton had six each and Barnard with four.
Beatrice will likely play in a district final game on Saturday even with a loss to Norris Tuesday night. The eight district champions and the next eight best teams in wild card points each advance to a district final game with the winners of those advancing to state. Beatrice was 10th in wildcard points entering Monday night's game.
