Class B No. 2 Waverly used a stingy defense to put a halt to Beatrice's offense on the way to a 48-29 win on Tuesday night at Waverly High School.

Abigail Clarke led the Vikings with 12 points, but bigger than her offensive work was her defense on Michaela Jones all night, Waverly coach John Cockerill said.

"I don't know if you will find a better defender in Class B," Cockerill said. "Whenever we want someone stopped, we put her on them. Then it gets her going with offensive energy as well."

The defense worked, as Jones had six points, none of which came in the second half.

Waverly hit four big third-quarter three-pointers to take a 42-27 lead into the fourth, where the Vikings put it away.

"We didn't change up much defensively, our girls just have bought in and are playing as one team," Cockerill said.

Carley Leners led Beatrice with 11 points while Jones and Addie Barnard had six points each. Mak Hatcliff had three points, Olivia Aden had two points and Haley Sexton had one point.

Beatrice is now 5-4 on the season and will be in action again on Saturday when they travel to South Sioux City.
