The Beatrice boys basketball team was looking for their second consecutive upset Saturday afternoon, but came up short.

A day after knocking off Class B No. 8 Columbus, the Orangemen fell to Class B No. 5 York 46-38 at the Ozone in Beatrice.

The loss snapped a 30-game home winning streak for the Orangemen. Their last loss was three years ago -- also to York.

York had an 11-point lead at half time, but Beatrice as able to get within two in the fourth quarter. The Dukes were just too much late, though.

Beatrice Coach Tyler Struck said he was proud of how his team battled back.

"We just told the kids to go out and fight in the second half," Struck said. "Our kids did that. They had plenty of opportunity to give up to a team that can really score, but they fought. It's true, we lost the win streak, but that's why we had the win streak in the first place. We always fight hard in this building."

The Dukes tried to pull away early and jumped out to a 9-2 lead in the first quarter. Beatrice closed the deficit to 11-10, but York maintained a 13-10 lead after one quarter.

The Orangemen offense struggled in the second quarter against York's zone defense. York built a 22-11 lead and then led 25-14 at the half.

York maintained a 36-25 lead midway through the third quarter, but the Orangemen finished the quarter with a run to make it 36-32 entering the final quarter.

Early in the fourth quarter, a three pointer by Trevor Schmale made it 38-35. A little later in the quarter, Graham Southwick hit a three pointer to make it 40-38.

Beatrice was held scoreless the rest of the way, though, and York made free throws down the stretch to eventually win 46-38.

"When you give a good team an 11-point lead at half time, it's going to be tough," Struck said. "We cut it to two at one point and if we had gotten a lead in the fourth quarter, I think the outcome may have been different."

Dillon Buss led the Orangemen with 12 points. Brady Danielson led York with 20 points.

"Danielson scored early and then just made his free throws late," Struck said. "We obviously don't want to give up 20 points to a kid, but I still don't think our defense was horrible on him. He made some tough shots and on our end, Buss had 12 points and he had some tough shots roll off the rim. We have to find a way to get Buss some cleaner shots, but you have to give Danielson credit for making those tough shots."

Colton Gronewold had seven points and Trevor Schmale and Graham Southwick had five points each. Andrew Mahoney had four points, Brayden Frerichs had three points and Logan Hutt had two points.

Beatrice is now 1-1 on the season and will travel to Crete on Thursday.

"Crete might have one of the better starting fives in Class B," Struck said. "It's going to be a tough game in a tough environment. It will be our first time playing in Crete's new gym and they make it a tough place to play because of the team they have on the floor and we'll have to be mentally ready to go."
