The Beatrice boys basketball team opened their season with a small upset Friday night at the Ozone in Beatrice.

The unranked Orangemen knocked off Class B eighth-ranked Columbus 44-40.

They were able to do it without their returning leading scorer Cam Jurgens, who was lost for the season due to an ankle injury during football.

Points were hard to come by early for the Orangmen without Jurgens. They only managed one point in the first quarter. Dillon Buss opened the game’s scoring with a free throw, but Columbus went on an 8-0 run the rest of the quarter to lead 8-1 after one.

With the score 9-1 early in the second quarter, Colton Gronewold hit two free throws to make it 9-3. The Discoverers re-extended their lead back to 12-3, but Beatrice would go on a 9-1 run to close the second quarter.

Graham Southwick started the run with two free throws and after Columbus answered with a free throw, Andrew Mahoney came back with four straight points to make it 13-9. A three pointer by Brayden Frerichs then electrified the home crowd, cutting the Orangemen deficit to 13-12 at half time.

The scoring picked up in the second half. Mahoney opened the third quarter with a take to the basket and Caleb Wallman followed that up with a free throw to give Beatrice a 15-13 lead.

Columbs would regain an 18-15 lead, but a basket by Frerichs cut the deficit to two. Columbus scored again to make it 20-17, but a three pointer by Mahoney tied the game. Buss then followed that up with a basket to make it 22-20.

Buss and Southwick both answered Columbus baskets. Columbus regained a 27-26 lead, but Buss finished the third quarter scoring with a free throw to make it 27-27 entering the final quarter.

Buss opened the fourth quarter scoring with a free throw and then Southwick knocked down a big three pointer to give Beatrice their biggest lead of the game at 31-27.

After a free throw from Columbus, Gronewold game back with a take to the basket to make it 33-28. He then got a steal and got fouled and made one free throw to extend the lead to 34-28.

Southwick answered Columbus free throws by knocking down four free throws of his own making the score 38-32 with 2:47 left in the game.

The Orangemen offense then successfully played keep away from Columbus for over a minute, forcing the Discoverers to foul with 1:32 left. They would miss their free throws, though, keeping Columbus’ hopes alive.

Beatrice’s defense held, though, and Southwick made another free throw to make it 39-32. Columbus came back down the court and hit a three pointer. They then got a steal and immediately hit another three pointer to make it 39-38 with 45 seconds left in the game.

Southwick made one of two free throws on the other end to make it 40-38. The Orangemen defense forced a difficult three point attempt and Trevor Schmale came down with the rebound and was immediately fouled.

Schmale made one of two free throws to make it 41-38 with 19 seconds left in the game. Columbus scored on a lay-up with 14.4 seconds left to make it 41-40 and immediately called a time out.

Out of the timeout, Schmale was fouled again. This time had made both free throws, extending the Beatrice lead to 43-40 with 10.4 seconds left.

Columbus was able to get a contested three pointer off, but it missed its mark badly. Mahoney rebounded with 1.5 seconds left. He was fouled immediately and made one of two free throws to make it 44-40, putting the game away.

Southwick had 13 points to lead the Orangemen while Mahoney had 10 points. Also scoring for Beatrice was Buss with seven, Gronewold and Frerichs with five each, Schmale with three and Wallman with one.

The Orangemen are now 1-0 on the season and they will be in action again Saturday afternoon when they host York at 3:30 p.m.
