Area wrestling having great seasons at Chadron State—headline

Two wrestlers from southeast Nebraska are having outstanding seasons at Chadron State College.

Taylor Summers of Plymouth, a graduate of Tri-County High School, has a 23-4 record at 133 pounds, and Chance Helmick, a Beatrice High graduate, is 26-3 at 174 pounds.

This past weekend, both were among Chadron State’s three champions at the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Tournament in Colorado Springs.

Summers is a senior and has a 91-33 career record with the Eagles. His 91 wins are 15th on Chadron State’s all-time list. Last season when he finished with a 26-9 record, he qualified for the NCAA Division II National Championships.

Helmick had a 31-9 record last season, when he wrestled at 165 pounds, and his 69 takedowns led the Eagles. He moved up a weight class this season and has continued to flourish. After pinning five opponents last season, he has 13 falls this year to lead both NCAA Division I and II nationally.

“I can’t say enough about the dedication, determination and work ethic of these two guys,” Chadron State Coach Brett Hunter said. “Neither has missed a match this season and they come to practice every day trying to get better.”

Hunter added that while he knew Summers and Helmick were outstanding prospects when he recruited them, they have probably exceeded his expectations.

“We’re always hoping that our recruits will develop into something really special, but it doesn’t always happen,” Hunter stated. “But both of these fellows have really filled the bill. They’ve helped our team and our program immensely.”

Summers has won 10 consecutive matches and Helmick has 12 in a row.

The Eagles have a 6-0 dual record against conference opponents with one dual remaining before the Regional Tournament later this month.

Summers concluded his career at Tri-County High in 2012 with a 39-1 record while placing third in Class C at 120 pounds. He was the runner-up at 112 the previous year. He is the son of Sheri Zulauf. His father, Mark Summers, died this past year.

Helmick was the Class B 170-pound state champion for the Beatrice Orangemen as both a junior in 2013 and a senior in 2014. He’s the son of Dan and Tami Helmick.
