WAVERLY – In a game that featured nine touchdowns and several big plays, it was a late defensive stand that preserved Waverly’s 35-28 win over Norris on Friday night.

Norris drove from its own 35 down to the Vikings’ 10-yard line and faced a first-and-goal with 29 seconds remaining.

Senior running back Austin Schultz – who finished with 151 yards rushing – carried the ball on first and second downs, getting Norris to the 3-yard line. Third down is when things turned interesting.

Schultz took a pitch from quarterback Aidan Oerter and darted for the pylon. Schultz went air-born and Norris players and coaches thought he scored the game-tying touchdown. But officials ruled him out of bounds inside the 1, setting up 4th-and-goal.

The Titans lined up and tried a sneak with Oerter. But the interior of the Vikings’ defense stopped the sophomore QB just short with 0.3 seconds remaining.

“It’s getting the monkey off our back,” Vikings coach Tim Williams said. “They’ve had our number recently, and it’s nice to do it in the fashion we did with the big stop at the end.”

Tempers flared after the final two Norris plays, but Titans coach Jim Jacobsen remained diplomatic afterward.

So, what explanation did the officials give Jacobsen regarding the third down Schultz run?

“Just said that he didn’t get in,” Jacobsen said. “That’s what they said.”

Midway through the fourth quarter it looked as if a late defensive stop wouldn’t be needed.

The Vikings went up 35-21 with 7:19 remaining when quarterback Rhett Jordon scored from 2-yards out. Jordon had a brilliant game, rushing for 129 yards and throwing for 133. The junior had two TDs on the ground and added a 60-yard scoring strike to junior receiver Jay Adams in the second quarter.

But the Titans wouldn’t relent, thanks to Schultz’ sheer determination.

His 36-yard catch set up Tyler Ruhl’s 11-yard touchdown reception from Oerter with 5:27 remaining. And after the Titans' defense held firm, his 17-yard reception on 4th-and-10 on Norris’ final drive kept the Titans alive.

For the game, Schultz would accumulate 237 total yards as he hauled in six passes and carried it 24 times on the ground.

Waverly got a huge boost right before half as speedy sophomore Ethan Kastens returned a kickoff 100-yards for a score to make it 21-14.

The kickoff return and Adams’ 60-yard TD reception proved to be pivotal plays for Waverly.

“They were huge,” Williams said of the big plays. “Our special teams have come up big for us in a couple wins this year. That kick return – that was a big difference right there.”

Fairbury 75, Raymond Central 7: Fairbury scored all of its points in the first three quarters behind a balanced offensive attack of 158 passing yards and 212 rushing yards. Adam Wasserman threw for five touchdowns for the Jeffs and Fairbury forced four interceptions and recovered three fumbles.
