LINCOLN -- The Beatrice girls golf team opened their season at the Lincoln East Invite Thursday at Holmes Golf Course in Lincoln.
The Lady O finished with a team score of 439, which was good enough for eighth place overall. They finished tied with Omaha Skutt in the team standings, the only other Class B school in the field.
Elkhorn South won the meet with a score of 336.
Individually, Sydney Southwick led the way for Beatrice with a 102 while Payton Neunaber finished with a 106 and and Mackenzie Barnard finished with a 108.
Rounding out Beatrice's scores was Blake Trusty with a 123 and Abby Jones with a 132.
Beatrice Coach Dick Stuart said he was pleasantly surprised with the individual results considering his team consists of all freshmen and sophomores.
"We weren't sure what to expect," Stuart said. "But we were excited about taking some underclassmen and see what they could do. We were surprised, but yet we know we can get better. We have a lot of things we can work on."
Stuart said the team's attitude is good and a good attitude usually results in steady improvement throughout the season.
"We know there will be some days when we have some ups and downs," Stuart said. "But overall, for the first meet, we got those jitters out of the way and we are excited to see how the rest of the year goes."
The Lady O will be in action again on Tuesday when they host the Beatrice Invite at the Beatrice Country Club.
