The Beatrice softball team jumped on top of Class B No. 5 York early Tuesday night, but couldn't hold onto the lead.
The Lady O fell to the Dukes 7-3 at Hannibal Park in Beatrice. Addison Barnard blasted two home runs in the game, but they were both solo shots.
Beatrice took an early lead when Barnard blasted a solo home run to lead off the bottom of the first, making it 1-0 early.
The Lady O would manage another run in the first inning when Olivia Aden singled, went to second on MiKayla Bletscher’s sacrifice bunt and scored on Jaci Berke’s RBI double to make it 2-0.
A bunt and three singles would lead to two runs for York in the third inning. Another run would score on an error to give York a 3-2 lead.
Barnard blasted her second home run of the game in the bottom of the third inning to tie it 3-3.
York regained the lead in the fifth inning when two singles and a ground out led to a run, making it 4-3. Two singles led to another run for York in the sixth inning to make it 5-3.
York would get two more big insurance runs in the seventh inning. the first came on a solo home run by Lauren Riley, which made it 6-3.
With two outs, a single and a double led to another run for the Lady Dukes, making it 7-3.
Carley Leners would try to get a rally started in the bottom of the seventh with one out, but the next two Lady O batters would make outs, ending the game.
Bailey Green pitched the first six innings for the Lady O, giving up six runs (five earned) on eight hits while striking out four and walking two. Jaci Berke pitched the seventh inning and gave up a run on two hits.
The Lady O defense committed two errors in the game.
Offensively, Beatrice had six hits, including Barnard's two solo home runs. Berke had a double while Aden, Whitney Schwisow and Carley Leners had a single each.
Beatrice falls to 7-9 on the season and will continue into a tough part of their schedule when they travel to Seward on Thursday.
