SEWARD -- The Beatrice boys basketball team might be finding their stride after a tough start to the season.
The Orangemen defeated Class B No. 9 Seward 56-44 on Saturday to improve to 6-5 on the season. It was their fourth straight win after starting the season 2-5.
Beatrice came out on fire against the Blue Jays. They outscored Seward 19-2 in the first quarter and worked to maintain that lead throughout the rest of the game.
Seward cut the deficit to 28-16 at half time and got within 10 at 39-29 entering the fourth quarter. The Orangemen would hold on for the 56-44 win.
Four different Beatrice players finished in double figures scoring. Dillon Buss led the way with 16 points while Graham Southwick had 12 points and Andrew Mahoney and Trevor Schmale had 10 points each.
Brayden Frerichs had six points and Colton Gronewold had two points.
Beatrice will try to continue their win streak on Thursday when they travel to face Class B No. 6 Aurora.
The Beatrice girls team lost to Class B No. 5 Seward 58-47, dropping their record to 5-3 on the season.
Beatrice jumped out to a 17-9 lead in the first quarter, but allowed Seward to take a 31-24 lead at half time. Beatrice closed the gap and trailed 39-35 entering the fourth quarter, but Sward outscored the Lady O 19-12 in the final quarter to win 58-47.
Carley Leners led the way for Beatrice with 16 points while Olivia Aden had 10, Michaela Jones had nine, Addie Barnard had seven, Jessica Fujan had three and Mak Hatcliff had two.
The Lady O will also travel to Aurora on Thursday.
