It was a tough afternoon for the Beatrice girls tennis team Thursday against Omaha Duchesne.

Beatrice hosted the defending Class B runner-up at Hannibal Park and fell to Duchesne 9-0.

"Duchesne is last year's state runner-up and they just play solid tennis," said Beatrice coach Amy Randel.

Beatrice's best chance at a win came in No. 2 doubles where the duo of Abby Witulski and Morgan Burenheide fell just short.

"Morgan and Abby continued to play very hard with many deuce games, but just fell short of playing a tiebreaker," Randel said. "Abby continued to play well in her singles match and just rand out of steam."

Randel still continues to be encouraged about the future of Beatrice girls tennis. She said the JV team also lost 9-0, b ut some freshmen are starting to show their potential.

"Playing against some great competition will only make our girls better as they continue to work their skills each time out," Randel said. "It is a process."

Beatrice will have a rescheduled match against Lincoln Pius X on Thursday at 4 p.m. at Hannibal Park in Beatrice.

The Lady O will then host a doubles tournament on Saturday, April 21, which will begin at 9 a.m. at Hannibal Park.
