LINCOLN – It took Meridian just three sets to get past their first round opponent in the Class D1 State Volleyball Tournament.
The top-seeded Mustangs swept eighth-seeded Elkhorn Valley 25-17, 25-15, 25-14 Thursday night at Lincoln East High School. With the win, Meridian advances to the semifinals against fourth-seeded Blue Valley at 11 a.m. Friday at Pinnacle Bank Arena.
Elkhorn Valley jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first set, but Meridian came back to tie it 5-5. Elkhorn valley regained a 9-8 lead, but Meridian scored five straight points to take a 13-9 lead.
From there, Meridian extended their lead to 16-11, but Elkhorn Valley came back to get within one at 16-15. That’s all the closer they’d get, though, as the Mustangs pulled away late to win 25-17.
Meridian exploded out to an 8-1 lead in the second set and kept Elkhorn Valley at bay the rest of the set, cruising to a 25-15 win.
Elkhorn Valley burst out to a 5-1 lead in the third set. Meridian fought back to tie it at 8-8 and then built a 19-13 lead, forcing an Elkhorn Valley timeout. Meridian then scored three straight points to make it 22-13, forcing another timeout. They would coast to the 25-14 win from there.
With a win on Friday, Meridian would advance to Saturday’s championship game at 11 a.m. at the Bob Devaney Sports Center.
