Guns

New cartridges are good, new firearms are interesting to see, but I think Savage Arms’ new AccuFit System to custom fit the stock to the shooter may be the most innovative thing I have seen so far from early S.H.O.T show releases. Getting a rifle to fit you correctly makes it more comfortable to shoot and makes you a lot more accurate. Stand by for more new products.

This is the time of year when most of the outdoor industry is getting ready for the 2018

Shooting, Hunting, Outdoor Trade (SHOT) Show in Las Vegas, January 23-26. Traditionally, this is where we get to see a lot of what will be introduced to the market for the year…anything and everything related to the outdoors.

I have a few insights on what will be seen through my industry contacts. There is no way that I can get every cover in the space I have in this column, so I’ve put together some high points to give you a taste of what will be out there this year. Here goes…

For shooters and reloaders, Speer will be introducing Speer Handloading Manual No. 15 and a new Gold Dot 200-grain 10mm automatic ammo cartridge. Gold Dot ammunition’s reliability has made it a top choice for law enforcement, and the powerful 10mm auto load is powerful enough to hunt deer sized game. Speer will also be 13 new cartridges, including 204 Ruger, 6.5 Creedmoor and the 300 Blackout.

CCI will unveil two new rimfire hunting loads during the 2018 SHOT Show, a 40grain Mini-Mag 22 LR with a Segmented Hollow Point and a 17 HMR 17-grain VNT Tipped bullet.

Mini-Mag is one of the popular 22 product lines out there. The new 22 LR Mini-Mag Segmented Hollow Point combines all of what made Mini-Mag a favorite with the bullet engineered to split into three equal-size parts on impact, creating three distinct wound channels that quickly take down small game and varmints.

The 17 HMR VNT is a 17-grain Speer bullet features an extremely thin jacket and polymer tip that offers flat trajectories, good long-range accuracy and explosive terminal performance on impact. It is designed to be a great round for small varmint hunting. The Mini-Mag 22 LR 40-grain Segmented Hollow Point will be packaged in 100-count packs and 17 HMR 17- grain VNT will come in 50-count packs.

Savage Arms is really “uping” their game for 2018. They will be showing off 28 new firearms, ranging from their Model 42 Over/Under, shotgun/rifle combo, two new rimfire rifles, a couple long range precision rifles and a host of other high power offerings, many of them being left-handed models. The new .224 Valkyrie cartridge will be making its formal debut, but maybe the most significant item being offered is the new AccuFit System that allows the shooter to almost custom fit their stock to them with interchangeable insert for length and the comb of the stock. It look pretty cool!

Swab-Its will be showing a demonstrating it line of lint-free gun cleaning supplies. I use Swab-Its and I like them. Most interesting to me are the bore cleaning items for large caliber rifles called Bore-Sticks.

Long range precision rifles have been the big news in the shooting world for the past year and Remington has introduced a new rifle based on its well-known Model 700 action. The Remington Precision Chassis Rifle (PCR) has a weatherproof, ultra-rigid aircraft-grade aluminum alloy chassis that the company says is the most stable and consistent shooting platform ever created for launching long-distance shots. The rifle will be offered in 6.5 Creedmoor, .280 Remington and the time tested .308.

In development, Remington used a series of four microphones that isolated the sounds of the shockwave of each bullet in a three-shot test group. Remington’s Computer Aided Targeting System (CATS) triangulates the exact position of the projectile, plots the coordinates and measures the distance between each shot to “tweak” the rifle barrel for maximum accuracy.

This procedure and the patented 5R rifling used in the PCR barrel is the same system used to make the M-24 Remington Defense sniper rifles used by U.S. Military sniper teams. A printed copy of each Model 700 PCR’s CATS accuracy test is included in the box before it leaves the hands of Remington engineers.

Oh…I may have to make room in one of the vaults for this one.
