The Nebraska Department of Environmental Quality announced that Gage County was awarded a $32,102 grant from the NE Waste Reduction and Recycling Incentive Grants Program to hold a scrap tire cleanup event for Gage County.

The county collection will be held on Wednesday, Aug. 15, and Thursday, Aug. 16, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. or until 375 tons have been collected. The location is at the parking lot just north of the Gage County Fairgrounds. Entrance will be on the west side.

No tires will be accepted after 375 tons or after 5 p.m. on Aug. 16 - whichever comes first. No rims are allowed. Tires will only be accepted from Gage County residents, and no tires will be accepted from tire retailers.

Participants must have a separate count of the car/pickup tires, large truck tires, tractor/combine/large implement tires or a "Tare" weight on truck loads of tires. Participants must unload their own tires.

The collection/recycling event is sponsored by the Gage County Board of Supervisors, Nebraska Extension, Keep Beatrice Beautiful and the Gage County Agriculture Society.

This will be the 12th Gage County Tire Amnesty. NE DEQ grant funds for the first 11 tire amnesty events have totaled more than $333,800. Total tonnage of tires removed from Gage County to date is 2,639 tons - equal to more than 5.3 million pounds of tires.
