Beatrice locals Melody and David Bruce recently opened a new restaurant in the Court Street Plaza in downtown Beatrice.
The husband and wife duo opened Melody’s Cafe last Wednesday. The couple said they’ve received an incredibly warm welcome from the community while specializing in home-cooked meals, and they strive for a community-oriented eating environment.
Melody said she finds the art of cooking to be a form of self-expression.
There is a small set menu at the cafe, with a heavy emphasis on rotating specials. The couple plans to add a local flair to their menu by naming menu items after different local landmarks. They’ve even named one of their sandwiches “The Beatrice,” which consists of pulled pork, brisket, bacon, spicy pickles and coleslaw, along with a side of chips. Another current menu favorite is the loaded fries, which are topped with cheese, sliced steak, onions, bell peppers and jalapenos.
The cafe also boasts a lunch buffet with rotating items. On Fridays, the buffet features Melody’s chicken wings, which the couple takes pride in as one of their specialties.
Melody and David said they’re determined to keep their business locally focused and they try to buy local products as much as they are able.
“If we don’t shop local and keep things local, we’re going to lose mom-and-pop stores” Melody said.
Melody enjoys striking up conversations with her customers and establishing relationships with the people of Beatrice. The couple wants to bring the community together with their food.
“We don’t want you to sit here and just hear your fork clinking.” Melody said. “I’m going to come up to you and ask how your day was.”
The restaurant is closed Mondays and Tuesdays, and is open from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Wednesdays. Thursdays and Fridays the restaurant is open 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. On Saturdays, Melody’s is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Sundays they host their lunch buffet from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. The couple is willing to host large groups and parties during the days they are closed if customers call ahead.
The couple appreciates the community they have found in Beatrice, and hope their business can help the town grow. They hope to see more small businesses start up in the area and plan to host some community events in the future to help people in Beatrice get to know their neighbors better.
