Beatrice Public Schools elementary students got their hands dirty this week when they had a chance to design their own pottery.

Stoddard and Lincoln elementary schools were visited by Nancy Fairbanks, a Grand Island-based sculptor who was in Beatrice as part of an artist in residence program.

She visited BPS students from Monday to Thursday and taught them the basics of pottery, and let them make their own creations to take home.

Pinch pots, coil pots, animal sculptures and human sculptures were a few of the designs students made, and Stoddard fifth grade teacher Carrye Meints said they enjoyed the visit.

“We don’t get this kind of time to work with the students and she brings a whole different aspect,” Meints said. “The first three days the kids were just like mesmerized by her.”

Fairbanks brought in pieces of her own work to show the classes, and students were able to take their creations home.
