An experienced painter will share her story, as well as tips for artists of every ability, during an upcoming program at Homestead National Monument of America.

Nancy Lehenbauer Marshall is the latest participant in the artist in residence program, which brings a variety of artists to the National Park Service site to draw inspiration from the prairie and host a public event.

“When I look at the paintings I’ve been doing over the last 40 years,” Marshall said, “they have a very surreal quality and preparing the talk that I’m giving in a week here, and because it has to do with farming, I’m just looking at what’s influenced me in where I think would be better for us to go as a culture and a community.”

On Sunday, Sept. 22 at 2 p.m. Marshall will present her program “Discovering Place through Painting” in the Homestead education center.

During her presentation, Marshall will show some of the many painting she has created in her 40-year career and discuss how creating art allows us to feel empathy.

“When you complete a good story, write a good song or paint a good painting it’s always kind of a surprise,” Marshall said. “When I look back at what I’ve done I can’t really recall how I built that, but I know it wasn’t a fast process. I tell people to be patient with themselves and just keep going.”

Marshall lives in Lawrence, Kan. where she works as an independent artist. Her paintings are in private collections throughout the world as well as at The University of Kansas, Spencer Museum of Art, Washburn University, Mulvane Art Museum, and the Flint Hills Discovery Center.

“We are excited to have Nancy with us as an artist in residence,” Homestead Superintendent Mark Engler said, “Her unique perspective as an artist will make for wonderful connections and new outlooks for monument visitors who interact with her.”

Marshall will be at Homestead through September 25. During her stay, she will work on her art on the grounds of the park and in the buildings. Visitors are welcome to watch her work and visit with her.
