Firefighters opted to let an abandoned house burn in a Monday evening fire that’s under investigation.

The fire at West Buckeye and Southwest 42nd roads, approximately 12 miles northwest of Beatrice, was reported at around 5:30 p.m. and drew firefighters from Pickrell, Cortland and Clatonia.

Pickrell Fire Chief Alan Wallman said firefighters were familiar with the location, owned by John DeCamp of Clatonia, which was the site of as many as seven fires in the last decade.

“I talked with Clatonia and Cortland and one of the Cortland guys knew about the house too and we just decided it wasn’t worth going in or cutting a hole in the roof,” he said. “We just decided to let it go.”

Wallman said he was unsure what started the fire, but did say it originated in a trailer east of the house and spread.

The home was abandoned and Wallman said the building had previously been considered to use as a practice burn.

He added the home had been vacant for around six months and firefighters remained at the scene until around 9 p.m.
