The Beatrice Regional Orchestra put a special spin on its yearly Christmas concert Tuesday night at the Hevelone Center.

Director Kevin Boesiger told the audience he wanted to do more than simply play familiar seasonal songs. That's why the orchestra enlisted the help of a narrator to interweave the story of Charles Dickens' "A Christmas Carol" with orchestral pieces selected to set the mood, including well-known Christmas melodies.

Narrating the story was Dennis Byars, a member of the Gage County Board of Supervisors. During his readings, all lights went dark except for his spotlight, creating an atmosphere suitable for Ebenezer Scrooge's lonely journey through visions of Christmases past, present and future.

The performance ended with another special guest, 10-year-old Jordan Zhang, who represented the character Tiny Tim as a solo singer during the orchestra's performance of "God Bless Us Everyone."
