A man involved in a Tuesday evening fire died at a Lincoln hospital on Wednesday.
The Gage County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched Tuesday to reports of a suicidal male in his mid-40s in a sport utility vehicle on South 36th Road between Hoyt and Highway 136 at around 6:15 p.m.
A press release from the department stated that while responding to the call, deputies were advised the male had lit himself on fire. Beatrice Fire and Rescue and Beatrice Rural Fire were then dispatched.
Upon arrival, deputies found the vehicle fully engulfed in flames, and the male was outside the vehicle laying on the opposite side of the road with severe burns. Deputies assisted the male to a safe distance away from the burning vehicle.
Beatrice Fire and Rescue and Beatrice Rural Fire extinguished the fire and paramedics cared for the patient. StarCare was contacted to transport the male to Saint Elizabeth Hospital in Lincoln for further treatment.
Based upon statements from the male and a witness, it is believed the fire was set intentionally.
The Gage County Attorney's Office confirmed that the man had died, and said the sheriff's office was still investigating the case Wednesday afternoon.
