A new restaurant recently opened in downtown Clatonia.
Sheila’s Bar and Grill, owned by Sheila and Dennis VanLaningham, operates at 210 Washington St. in Clatonia, the same building that formerly housed Legends of Clatonia.
The couple said that after Legends relocated to Beatrice, the people of Clatonia wanted a new restaurant to replace it.
“When Legends left the locals didn’t have anywhere to go to lunch,” Sheila said.
Sheila, a former manager at Legends when it was in Clatonia, saw the opportunity and approached owner Ron Tegtmeier about leasing the building.
The couple said that the community has responded well to the restaurant’s opening, and that people have been thankful to have a restaurant in Clatonia again. The VanLaninghams said that the opening was rewarding but challenging.
“It’s been fun, hectic and scary all at the same time.” Dennis said.
Sheila said the menu contains typical bar and grill classics, highlighting the chicken fried steak and the burgers, which she said were a crowd favorite. The restaurant also hosts a taco bar on Tuesdays.
Sheila said the couple wants to keep the restaurant’s atmosphere relaxed and welcoming so that they can better service the whole town of Clatonia. They hope people can consider the restaurant a place to relax and enjoy a good meal.
Sheila also works across the street at Sherman welding, and she said people stop in there to thank her for opening the restaurant.
“That’s what makes this worthwhile,” Dennis said, “everyone comes to support us.”
Sheila’s has a bar area with pool and foosball tables, a casual dining room decorated with Husker memorabilia, and another room the VanLaninghams call The Clatonia Room, which is decorated with items from Clatonia’s past. By providing three distinct rooms, the couple hopes that they can provide a variety of experiences to their guests.
Sheila’s will be hosting tailgate parties for all Husker football games this season, as the tailgates at Legends were a great success in Clatonia. Dennis said the couple is excited for the tailgates, as they enjoy sharing their Husker pride with the entire Clatonia community.
The tailgates will feature specials on both drinks and food, in addition to serving Sheila’s full regular menu. The couple hopes that Sheila’s will be a good place for people to enjoy Husker football this season.
Sheila’s is open daily from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. for lunch and for dinner from 5-9 p.m., with the bar open later on weekends.
