A new sandwich and snack shop is coming to Beatrice, with plans to open next month.
The Garden Deli and Treat Shop will celebrate a grand opening on Nov. 1 inside the Indian Creek Mall. Owner Mike Gay said the restaurant will feature a variety of food and dessert items.
“We’re going to sell sandwiches, soups and salads,” he said. “You can sit down, take it out or we can deliver it. We’ll also have a full service treat shop.”
Ice cream, frozen yogurt, shaved ice, root beer floats in a frosty mug and other treats will be available at the location, which Gay hopes will eventually support online ordering.
“We really want the customers to define the store as time goes,” Gay added. “We’ll be changing and adding things as we see what people want and like.”

Gay also owns Beatrice Mini Golf near the mall building. Next year, he plans to offer party packages for birthdays and other events where kids can start at the golf course and end with treats at the shop.
“We wanted to have the ice cream at the miniature golf course, but that never really worked out,” he said. "It will be nice to have a real close place to get ice cream and treats after, especially the ice cream. I know a lot people were asking for a good ice cream shop in town. This will be an opportunity to do that.”
The Garden Deli and Treat Shop will be located in the former location of Florio’s Italian Grille, which closed after opening in 2015.
Gay, who grew up in Beatrice, said he’s been wanting to open a restaurant for around 15 years before this opportunity came up. He also said that he’s excited to open and start the new venture.
“We’re looking forward to seeing everybody come out who wanted a hometown quality business,” he said. "There will be something for the whole family. We’re going to have something for everyone and are really excited about it.”
