Darlene L. Meints
Darlene L. Meints, 92 years of age, of Fremont died on Thursday, Feb. 1, 2018 at Parkside Manor in Stuart, Neb.
Darlene was born on Sept. 13, 1925 in Beatrice to Frank and Louise (Deeke) Roschewski. She grew up in Beatrice where her parents had a 28-acre truck farm. She worked with her brother in the garden and milking cows. They were paid 10 cents a row for hoeing and 2 1/2 cents a quart for picking strawberries. She graduated from Beatrice High School in June 1943, then went to work full time at Dempster Mill Mfg. Co., where she was secretary to the treasurer.
Darlene met Melvin Meints in 1946 after he returned from WWII and he was working at Dempster Mill. They were married on June 29, 1947 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Beatrice. In 1958, they moved to Fremont, where they had a diesel repair shop and did work for Hormel's. Darlene did the dispatching and ran the office. In 1979, they moved to Omaha, where they built another repair shop, “Mel's Mobile Diesel Service,” near 61st and L, where she again ran the office until 1985, when they both retired. After retirement, they spent their winters in the Rio Grande Valley, near Mission, Texas. In the summer, they continued their camping adventures, often taking their grandson, Shawn, on these trips.
Darlene was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. In 1998, they moved back to Fremont, where they built a new home. They spent the rest of their married life there, until Mel's death in 2007. After Mel passed away, Darlene continued traveling to Washington D.C., Las Vegas, to Husker games and to many "Team Jack" galas in Lincoln. She moved to the Atkinson area in 2015 to be closer to her family because of failing health.
She is survived by her daughter, Jan (Carl) Roberts of Atkinson, Neb.; her grandson, Shawn Roberts and fiancee, Kumi Ebihara of Alexandria, Va.; and several beloved nieces, nephews and cousins.
Darlene was preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Louise Roschewski; her brother, LaVern Roschewski; and her husband, Melvin Meints.
