Marcella B. Hedges
Marcella “Marci” Burnyce (Clough) Hedges, 95, of Beatrice died Thursday, Oct. 26, 2017 at Good Samaritan in Beatrice. She was born March 11, 1922 in Chase County near Imperial at her parent's ranch. She moved with her family to Beatrice at the age of one and graduated from Beatrice High school in 1940. She visited friends originally from Nebraska and lived in California, with a girlfriend when she was 19. That is where she met Dell Hedges, originally from Panama, Neb. After she returned to Nebraska, Dell proposed to her so she got on a train to meet him in Las Vegas to get married, which they did on July 4, 1942. They lived in California and both worked at Northrop Aviation until returning to Nebraska in 1947. After living in Lexington, Western and Fremont, they moved to Beatrice in 1954. She was the owner-operator of Plaza Drug Store for 21 years before retiring in 1982. Marci and Dell loved to play golf together and Marci had many golf tournament wins to her credit in the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s, including a hole-in-one and was the winner of the Beatrice Country Club women's championship. She also represented Beatrice Country Club in statewide golf tournaments and qualified to play in a national tournament in Florida. She was a member of the Centenary United Methodist Church of Beatrice, a past president of the Junior Women's Club, the Homestead Garden Club and served on the Country Club board. She volunteered for many years at the Beatrice Humane Society and Beatrice Community Players. She was an avid Husker football fan.
Survivors include two sons, Dell (Gibb) Hedges, II and wife, Pam, of Beatrice and Jonathan Hedges and wife, Julie, of Hudson, Ohio; grandchildren, Bradley and Eric Hedges of Lincoln, with Steven, Paul and Jennifer Hedges of Hudson, Ohio; two great-grandsons; nieces and nephews; as well as great-nieces and great-nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Ralph and Marie Brust Clough; her husband, Dell, who died Nov. 3, 2002; he siblings Milo, Vilas, Thelma, Orman, Percy and Waldo.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 6, 2017 at the Centenary United Methodist Church of Beatrice, with the Rev. Mark Schutt officiating. The family requests bright colors be worn. Burial will be in the Evergreen Home Cemetery of Beatrice. A memorial has been established to the Beatrice Humane Society. A family prayer service will be held at 9:45 a.m. Monday in the library of the church. The body will lie in state at the Fox Funeral Home of Beatrice from 12 noon Saturday until 9 p.m. Sunday, and at the church for one hour preceding the services on Monday.
