Vernon L. Kadlec

Vernon LeRoy Kadlec of Bemidji, Minn., and formerly of Beatrice, has died. With great sadness, the family of Vernon Kadlec announces his passing, after a brief illness, on Feb. 24, 2018 at the age of 84. Vernon was born on April 11, 1933 in Odell and graduated from Odell High in 1951. After graduation, he served as a metal smith in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War from 1951 to 1955. He married Dolores Forke on May 5, 1956 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Beatrice. After the war, Vernon worked at Dempster Industries as a welder for nine years. He was a firefighter for the Beatrice Fire Department from November 1965 until his retirement in February of 1989. He also worked at various other businesses in Beatrice, including Dole Floral, Roszell's Office Equipment and MelRon's Office Equipment. Vernon enjoyed following Nebraska Cornhusker football and St. Louis Cardinals baseball, as well as completing crossword and jigsaw puzzles.

He is survived by Dolores, his wife of 61 years; and two daughters, Colleen Greer (Deb Peterson) of Bemidji, Minn. and Kayla (Eric) Stratton of Snohomish, Wash. He leaves behind three grandchildren, Bryan, Rebecca and Ethan; two great-grandchildren; and his brother, Alvin Dale (Shirley) Kadlec of Beatrice. He was preceded in death by his parents, Aldrich and Esther (Hicks) Kadlec; and three sisters.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, March 2, 2018 at 10:30 a.m. at Harman-Wright Mortuary in Beatrice, with interment to follow in the Evergreen Home Cemetery in Beatrice. Military honors will be conducted by Bitting-Norman American Legion Post 27 and the U.S. Navy. Visitation will be held on Thursday, March 1, 2018 from noon to 8 p.m. at the mortuary.
