Beatrice Fire and Rescue quickly extinguished a fire that destroyed a pickup truck and damaged a building near Sixth and Scott streets.

Firefighters were dispatched to the fire at around 2 p.m.

At the scene, a pickup that appeared to have a load of brush was engulfed in flames, which had spread to the roof of the nearby building at 319 S. Sixth St., though damage to the building was minimal and the fire never expanded to the interior of the building.

A car in the area was also damaged, though Fire and Rescue Chief Brian Daake said it was believed the car had already been in a previous fire and was not functioning.

A stack of pallets and other nearby items were also destroyed by the fire. Additionally, the power line leading into the building and meter were both destroyed.

The cause of the fire is being investigated, and Daake said it appeared suspicious in nature.

Beatrice Fire and Rescue, the Beatrice Police Department and Board of Public Works crews responded to the scene.
