A truck fire shut down traffic on Highway 136 briefly about a mile and a half into Johnson County on Wednesday.
The Filley Rural Fire Department was dispatched at about 11:15 a.m. to the scene of a truck and horse trailer burning on the shoulder of westbound 136 just east of Crab Orchard. No injuries were reported.
The Johnson County Sheriff’s Department also responded to the scene of the fire, which was hot enough to melt the tires on the truck and reduce the interior of the vehicle to just the skeletons of seat frames. Firefighters pulled smoking, smoldering hay bales from the trailer, broke them apart and extinguished them.
The fire was extinguished and both directions of traffic were able to resume just before noon.
Johnson County Sheriff Scott Walton said the cause of the fire was still unknown and that the trailer was unoccupied by horses when the blaze started.
“It was empty, thank God,” Walton said.
