City administrator and Beatrice Public Works General Manager Tobias Tempelmeyer said the outage occurred at roughly 3:50 a.m. Wednesday, and was caused by a section of underground power cable failing near Southeast Community College-Beatrice .

Southeast Community College's Beatrice location was also without electricity and was forced to cancel classes for the day.
"Initially we had 736 customers without power," Tempelmeyer said. "We had all but approximately 75 customers back on before 8 a.m."
Beatrice electric department crews located and isolated the bad section of underground cable and plan to repair it without any additional interruptions to service.
