Rep. Eric Swalwell of California on Monday became the first Democrat to exit the 2020 presidential race.

The four-term congressman's White House effort never progressed significantly with voters in the crowded Democratic primary. Swalwell had earlier signaled that he would consider bowing out if he was in danger of missing the cutoff for the next nationally televised Democratic debate, which is being held later this month.
