Another year will soon begin, and if you’re like most folks, you are probably wondering what happened to 2018.

For those of us associated with the Beatrice Humane Society, it was another amazing year at the Beatrice Animal Shelter. With less than a week before the end of the year, our records indicate that to date, 495 cats and 302 dogs came through the shelter’s doors…and the year is not over.

Dedicated shelter staff works diligently to find good homes and positive outcomes for all of these animals. Most, of course, go directly into their forever home. Some go to breed rescue groups, some go to the Second Chance Pups program at the State Penitentiary, some go to the two PetSmart locations in Lincoln, and a select few go into training to become therapy dogs or service dogs.

Our local shelter is very proud of the success rate it has for placing animals in positive settings. Our euthanasia rate is very low and has earned us the status of a no-kill shelter. This is especially noteworthy considering the 800 animals that have come to us for help. Helping these animals takes a lot of manpower and dollars.

Our Community Cares

Thanks to the generosity of this community and the dedication and commitment of caring employees, the animals at the Beatrice Animal Shelter get a second chance at a good life. Special funds for both dogs and cats are in place for those that need additional medical care or surgery that would be beyond the scope of the shelter’s budget.

Area residents stop by the shelter to drop off food, treats, cleaning and laundry supplies, leashes, collars, and more to help with the cost of keeping the doors open. Cat litter is always on the shopping list, and with the current census of feline friends, we are always in need of more litter. And if you do choose to donate some, please get the non-clumping kind. It works best for a variety of reasons.

Special thanks to all who shared Christmas joy with the Beatrice Humane Society by sending cash donations. All of the Christmas contributions will go to the care of our animal guests. If you would like to make an end-of-the-year gift, it’s not too late.

Please send it to the Beatrice Humane Society, P.O. Box 646, Beatrice NE 68310 and mark it “Christmas Donation”. Your support is greatly appreciated by all the critters…two-legged and four-legged.

Meet Bruiser

One of those critters that has benefitted from the services of the Beatrice Animal Shelter is little “Bruiser." Bruiser has a big name, but he is just a little guy…an eight-year-old Chihuahua mix.

Bruiser came into the shelter with an eye problem, but thanks to the Scully Fund for Special Needs Dogs, he was able to have a procedure to take care of it. He is now looking for his forever home. Because he needs drops in his eyes on a regular basis, the adoption fee has been reduced to 50 dollars and is even negotiable beyond that.

If you would like to meet Bruiser, stop in at the shelter during regular business hours – noon to 6 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday and noon to 3 p.m. on Saturday. The shelter will be closed New Year’s Day.
