CRETE – Crete’s size and strength was too much for Beatrice Thursday night in Class B girls basketball action.
The Lady Cardinals defeated Beatrice 51-25 at Crete High School, dropping the Lady O’s record to 1-1 on the season.
Crete 1-3-1 defense created problems for Beatrice’s offense early on, allowing them to build a lead in the first half. They also were able to control the rebounding game throughout.
“We thought we were ready for them, but their size really did bother us,” said Beatrice Coach Dennis Coudeyras. “They got up on us and that really made us scramble. Then we couldn’t sub the way we wanted to and we got tired in the second half, so they got a lot of easy basket.”
Michaela Jones scored the first points of the game but the rest of the first quarter belonged to Crete. The Lady Cardinals used that tough 1-3-1 defense to keep Beatrice from scoring while they went on a 14-0 run to lead 14-2 after one quarter. Carley Leners also picked up two fouls early, which made Crete’s size even more difficult to handle
Beatrice finally got some offense going in the second quarter. Carley Leners hit two free throws and then scored on a baseline out-of-bounds play to make it 14-6.
Crete scored on their next possession, but Beatrice’s Addie Barnard answered with a three pointer. After another Crete basket, Jones turned a Cardinal turnover into a coast-to-coast lay-up, making it 18-11.
Jones had one more three point play in the first half, but the Cardinals would go into the locker room at half time leading 24-14.
Barnard opened the second half lay-up with a fast break lay-up off a Cardinal turnover, but Crete would hit two three pointers and two field goals for a 10-0 run, making it 34-16. Leners finally ended the run with two free throws, but Crete would go into the fourth quarter with a 37-18 lead.
Crete continued to pull away in the fourth quarter on their way to a 51-25 win.
Coudeyras said they have to change their philosophy a bit on defense.
“We have to make it a full court game, we can’t be doing this half court stuff,” Coudeyras said. “We’re going to work on that because against a team that size, we have to use our quickness. We never could do that today, so we’ve got to move up the floor and put pressure on them.”
Jones had 11 points for the Lady O while Barnard had seven points, Leners had six points and Jenna Junker had one point.
“I try not to use shooting as an excuse, but we were like 9 for 39 going into the fourth quarter,” Coudeyras said. “You can’t control shots, you can control some of the other stuff. We shot poorly, but that’s probably more of a credit to (Crete). We have to use our quickness and get steals and get more easy baskets. We didn’t get hardly any easy baskets.”
Crete’s record improves to 3-1 on the season while the Lady O fall to 1-1. Beatrice will be in action again Tuesday when they host Omaha Duchesne.
“We are going to learn a lot from film from this one,” Coudeyras said. “I still really like this team and we’ll see where we go from here.”
