Diller-Odell was able to avoid a foul and dribble the clock out to claim the MUDECAS B Division Championship Friday night.

The Lady Griffins defeated Tri County 45-44 to win the championship.

A basket by Emily Swanson with 19 second left in the game extended the Griffin lead to 45-42. Out of a timeout, the Trojans were able to score a basket to cut the deficit to one.

The Lady Griffins in-bounded the ball and were able to dribble up the sideline, avoiding a foul. The buzzer sounded as time expired, sparking a Griffin celebration.

Tri County coach John Mohr said his team was struggling coming into this tournament, so to win three straight against a solid field of teams will help them going forward.

"Hopefully this is a springboard for us going forward," Mohr said. "We feel like we can compete against some of the A division teams and we did early in the season, but we got the top seed in the B division and we had that attitude of lets play ball like a No. 1 seed. Tri County gave us a heck of a ball game tonight and it was a fun game to coach."

Mackenzie Vitosh scored the first two points of the game midway through the fourth quarter, but Tri County's Brianna Connelly answered immediately with a jump shot.

The Griffins scored the rest of the first quarter points -- all from the free throw line. Emily Swanson had two of those free throws while Vitosh and Haley Jones had a free throw each, making it 6-2 after one.

Both offenses erupted in the second quarter. Tri County's Shay Niemeyer started things with a jumper, but back to back baskets by Diller-Odell's Addison Heidemann made it 10-4.

Tri Count's Madison Freese scored to cut the deficit back to four, but a three pointer by Diller-Odell's Camaryn Gydesen and a free throw by Vitosh made it 14-6.

Tri County's Kynlee Uher ended the run with a three pointer, but two free throws by Vitosh made it 16-9.

Tri County scored the next seven points to tie the game. Connelly got it started with a free throw and Hannah Holtmeier followed that up with a basket. Two free throws by Niemeyer and a basket by Alyssa Brown capped the run.

Diller-Odell's Heidemann finished the first half scoring with a basket, giving the Lady Griffins an 18-16 lead at half time.

Diller-Odell's Haley Jones scored the first two points of the third quarter, but the Lady Trojans answered that with a 7-0 run. Niemeyer's three point play followed by four straight points by Freese gave Tri County a 23-20 lead.

Emily Swanson's basket ended the run, but five straight points by Niemeyer extended the Trojan lead to 28-22.

Vitosh then scored and Hayley Denner followed that up with a free throw to make it 28-25. Jones finished the third quarter scoring with two free throws after a technical foul was called on Tri County, which cut the Trojan lead to 28-27 after three quarters.

The two teams battled to a 33-33 tie midway through the fourth quarter. Uher and Gydesen then traded three pointers to make it 36-36.

Tri County regained a three point lead after a three point play by Uher, but two free throws by Jones and and a steal and lay up by Swanson gave Diller-Odell the lead back at 40-39.

Freese's free throw tied it, but a basket by Swanson in the post made it 42-40. After a steal, Swanson made one free throw to make it 43-40.

Niemeyer came back with two free throws to make it 43-42 with 27 seconds left in the game.

Swanson came back with a basket and was fouled in the act, but she missed her free throw, giving the Trojans another chance.

Tri County opted to go for the two pointer, but were unable to foul to stop the clock, ending the game.

Mohr said he team did a good job of defending the three pointer on that last possession, forcing Tri County to go for the two.

"We knew there wasn't much time on the clock, so even if they made a two, they would have to foul quick," Mohr said. "I think we defended the three pretty well, so they took the open shot they could find. They just ran out of time -- thankfully -- for us."

Swanson had 11 points for the Griffens, including big points down the stretch.

"She is playing post for the first time," Mohr said. "She's athletic and physical on the inside and she's getting better."

Jones also had 11 points for the Griffens while Vitosh had 10, Heidemann and Gydesen had six each and Denner had one.

Mohr said it has been a while since Diller-Odell has won a MUDECAS championship, so he's happy they were able to get the job done.

"You know, regardless of what class you're in, it's special because it's such a special tournament,"  Mohr said. "So we are really excited that the girls were able to accomplish that."

Niemeyer had 17 points for the Trojans while Uher and Freese had nine each. Connelly had three while Holtmeier, Brown and Kowalski had two each.

It is Diller-Odell's first MUDECAS Championship since 2006, which was also a B Division championship.

The MUDECAS girls A Division championship pitted Sterling against Exeter-Milligan. that game wasn't over by press time Friday night. See beatricedailysun.com for results.
